I agree with flavor rhythm guitar with some leads, this sound to me like what Hendrix, John Mayer, Frusciante and some other folks do on their rhythm playing, or should we call this "mixed" playing? because they tend to blend things so well that it can be hard to tell rhythm from lead.
But on the other hand I don't believe that most rhythm is "just the same old stuff". I know there are lots of genre-specific things for rhythm guitar, from chords voicing to things like walking bass lines and how to place your guitar with other instruments on a band. And what I'm looking for is a path or guidance from someone that have been through this before and can get me out of some dead ends.
If I had enough time to only play guitar and not worry about anything else, I would be more than happy to find that path myself and explore every single aspect of what this instrument can provide us, but currently I can't.
Maybe what I really need is stop looking for "the right content/class" and just play more guitar with other people, cut what is "too much", find and learn what is missing, rinse and repeat.
