When I learned the modes a long time ago, we used the one finger per fret approach. This means only 2 notes are played on some strings. I'm having trouble adjusting to 3 notes per string because it's not always clear what the fingering should be. In the videos it looks like Tyler is really using index, middle, and ring fingers all the time, but this isn't always "ergonomic" and comfortable. Would love to see a video focusing on fingering while navigating across the fretboard.
Hi Bryan,
The reason I don't indicate fingerings is that depending on your hand size or playing style, you may prefer to use your ring finger in place of your pinky in some areas of the neck, and since the positions are meant to be applied to any scale, in any position, it wouldn't be beneficial for someone to try and use an assigned fingering in an area of the neck where that fingering may not actually be the most ergonomically friendly. My advice is to work on the positions and listen to your body when you play. As you practice, you'll gain more flexibility, and the stretches will become easier. Good luck!
Yeah...I get the rational why maybe not to including fingering. But, we (novices) are left tediously rewinding, rewinding, rewinding, over and over again trying to see what fingering you used—just to try the fingering you used to see if we like it or to see what we have to possibly work towards. Surely many of these fingering you use are relatively common. Surely? :) We will beg if we have to. Maybe just throw some fingering possibilities on some of the basics—like on the 5 Positions of Minor Pentatonic PDF. Pleeeeeease... :) :) I'll "Like" your next new album in Spotify if you do. :O
